Sharing experience on studying this subject...

In my personal opinion, one should have high motivation and enthusiasm, strong work ethic and desire for excellence to pursue graduate studies.

Current activities...

I am involved in many activities but my principal responsibility is to do research which involves creating ideas, collecting relevant data, developing and running models/algorithms and writing papers about the research. I am also involved with research projects for which my study is being funded. I had to work as a teaching assistant for two semesters.

Participation in local/international competitions...

I participated in ACM-ICPC regional contest (Programming contest) and our team got 5th position in the contest.

Preparations for higher studies...

I feel like we lack some basic skills which are very important for graduate studies. As a result we have to give some extra efforts and time to learn these skills in graduate school. These skills include: basic knowledge in linear algebra, probability and optimization; programming skills; and technical writing skills.

Scholarship, your approach...

I am funded for research assistantship. I approached my supervisor with my credentials and talked about my research interests and past works. He was looking for someone who fits for his research projects and has similar research interests. I chose this school based on the reputation of the program, its faculties and the research interests and reputation of my advisor.

PhD field/topic...

My field of interest is the broad area of transportation science. I am working on how to use emerging data sources (e.g. geo-location from smart phones, social media) to infer human activity and mobility patterns.

Research fields and prospects...

Having been working in this field for the last five years, I feel that this is a very active field working on many emerging problems with global applications. With more and more economic growth over the world sustainable mobility management will be a very attractive research area. Integrated network modeling, urban analytics, energy and emission in transportation, connected vehicles and disaster management are some current trends in this field.
