Prerequisites for studying this subject...
Any student who is good at Mathematics and Physics can take this subject. The level of Mathematics and Physics in our H.S.C is quite standard. If they are good at these subjects, they can also do better in CSE as well.
Specific talents that can motivate to CSE...
Students having analytical ability can do well in CSE. Those who love to solve new problems, or love to learn new things can be motivated to taking this subject. I must say that, those who are not that much in to memorizing, but love to play with newer stuffs, try to solve new problems, be it like mathematical problem, real life problem, he/she should be motivated to take CSE.
Interesting events, international/national competitions...
This field is so diversified that we have international/national competitions all through the year. For example, ACM ICPC is the most important competition in this field, it is basically a problem solving programming contest. We have robotics competition, those who are into gaming can participate in game development contests, we have design contests as well. We all know that one of the key factors involving computer programming is the User Interface design, so design contests are of great significance. Moreover, in our country, there are different idea contests going on around. Idea contest means how to solve different social, economical problems efficiently. These solutions are basically ICT based, so these competitions are very much related to computer science.
Our students are doing excellent in these competitions. Every year we participate at ACM ICPC and we are doing well. We have also done very well in recent robotics competitions. We also have competition like Imagine Cup, organized by Microsoft for student developers.
Is the subject mathematical/logical/theoretical?
This subject is basically a mixture of all the three. Precisely to say, mathematical in the sense because there are several aspects where we have to derive a proof. When we propose a solution, we have to prove it as well. There are problems which computer scientists are yet to prove, so studying these problems is obviously theoretical. This subject is comprised of logics. We study anything related to this field through a sequence of logics. So these three categories are equally important while studying CSE.
Goals that can be reached...
The scope is unlimited. Here anyone can choose to become a computer scientist. He can join a company as a software developer. If he is good at arts and drawing, he can join as a designer. If he/she is good at analyzing things, then he/she can join as System Analyst. Those who are good at hardware, can work at designing chips. They can work with microcontroller, commonly known as embedded system. They can learn to design processors, motherboards and work at companies like Intel. There is another huge domain called mobile computing. Developing applications for smart phones and tablets is a huge sector now. Sensor programming is also an important field. Those who love to work at device level can work with sensors like light sensor, heat sensor etc.
Jobs and job sectors...
Regarding jobs, I will always put CSE ahead of all other disciplines. Because the availability of jobs is 100%. Recent trends show that the starting salary on an average can be forty thousand in Bangladesh. Within 6 months, we have seen it to grow up to sixty thousand as well. At international level, it is almost six thousand US dollar, which is about five lacs in Bangladeshi Taka. According to CNN, among top 5 jobs, three of them are Data Analyst, System Analyst, Software Engineer; all three of which are from Computer Science discipline.
Dream jobs...
In case of Bangladesh, it can be like working at Playdom. It is wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. There are other companies like Samsung R&D which are more demanding here in Bangladesh. From international perspective, there are huge opportunities. In USA, job at Google is said to be the most demanding. Google is recruiting thousands of engineer every year. Moreover, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Oracle, Intel also recruit CSE graduates. In recent times, Bangladeshi graduates are joining Google even before completing higher studies, whereas we have seen before that they had to complete Masters at US and then they were recruited. So recent trends are suggesting that our graduates are recruited from top companies even before they complete their graduation. Just a month back, Google did a campus recruitment. Two of our students from 05 batch are already working at Google. Three students from 07 batch got job offers from Google even before completing their undergraduation. So we expect that more companies will do campus recruitment in future.
Chances of entrepreneurship and leadership...
One of the most exciting aspect of CSE is that, entrepreneurship is easier here. Here we do not need any massive infrastructure to startup a company. If there is talent and idea, then it is easier to become an entrepreneur. For example, we have seen the development of Facebook. He was then a student when he launched this website, and now Facebook is a huge company. In recent years, more and more CSE graduates in Bangladesh have formed their own company. So we are creating jobs, which is not that easier in other fields.
Higher studies...
There are two scopes, firstly one can go abroad, do his Masters and doctorate and apply for a job. Secondly, one can do higher studies in his/her field of interest, and continue doing research work on that field. In this regard, top universities from USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, European countries provide huge funding for computer research. Since our country cannot provide such massive funding and research facilities, it is better for CS graduates to go abroad and utilize their talent.
Singapore has recently visited and asked so that our students go there and do research works.
Research fields...
Sky is the limit. Precisely to say, starting from cancer treatment, there is a huge factor like data analysis, which can only be done by a CS student. Then comes the field of robotics. CS students contribute in the artificial intelligence sector. Besides rendering 3D animations and graphics is a huge research field. Movies like WALL-E, Finding Nemo etc. were developed by computer scientists. There is another interesting field called Big Data Analysis. We have a huge collection of data, and if we knew how to analyze them, we could have solved many different problems. For example, if cell phone network companies could analyze the huge data they have, they could provide better services and do better business.
The bottom line is, people like physicists, medical scientists come to computer scientists to analyze their data and findings. So the research opportunity is huge.
To the newcomers...
Those who love to solve new problems, willing to discover new dimensions, have a good analytical ability, he/she is welcome to the world of Computer Science and Engineering. They can take this subject without any doubt.
