Prerequisites for studying this subject...

From the childhood he/she should be able to think differently and should be creative. Likewise, he should be able to paint or at least should have a judgmental perception about paintings of others. He should have an aesthetic value about beauty and nature.

Specific talents that motivate a student to Architecture...

The main target of architecture is designing for human beings. As architects design buildings for human beings so those who have a perception or an ability to observe human being, his behavior and psychology, are perfect to study architecture. Besides, students who have a kinship to paintings or often going to arts exhibitions and trying to interpret the paintings there on the board are also fit for architecture.

Is the subject mathematical/ logical/ theoretical?

The subject is both mathematical and aesthetic. So there is a very nice combination of arts and science. The students must be good at mathematics. He must be logical. And art is a fundamental need. This art includes paintings, music, literature or anything that relates human being to nature and beauty. It is seen that students who are able to solve geometric or algebraic problems by using multi-dimensional graphs do excellent works in architecture. So, the subject is mathematical, logical and also aesthetic. Also the training we provide in architecture is more like problem solving. All the problems that students solve are from outside the textbook. They solve them by their own thinking, imaginations and by hard work.

Goals that can be reached...

Architects can do anything. Any goals they aspire for are reachable from their position. This is because the way architects get trained. They learn how to think and how to solve problems. This ability of theirs helps them in every step of their life. So architects can be very good at designs and structures. Besides, architects can be world class photographers, filmmakers or even writers.

Chances of entrepreneurship and leadership...

When an architect works at a building site, the clients contact the architect, not the other engineers. Clients describe all their needs to the architect and architect is the contact point. What I am saying is that the architect is answerable to the client. So in most cases the architects become team leaders. Therefore, an architect must know more or less about all the sectors of engineering and other factors. We the architects study history, philosophy, mechanical engineering, structures, electrical engineering and also psychology. So throughout the course our students are being trained up as a leader. As a result, an architect can easily be an entrepreneur, can start his own business and lead the world.

Interesting events related to Architecture...

We have international events for architects. We also organize lots of seminars and symposiums. Our students get exposure to the greatest architectural minds of the world. Many national and international competitions are arranged for the students. For example, last year there was a competition arranged by Archasia. It was an international competition. 17 different countries participated there and so did we. Two teams from Bangladesh, both from BUET went there. But the most amazing part is that both the teams scored very well. Among all students from different countries like Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Rim countries, one of our teams secured the first position and the other became third. Besides, competitions are arranged nationally. Berger paints, Asian paints and cement companies arrange these competitions seeking for solutions from the young minds. And there we see a lot of great solutions coming from our students.

Jobs and job sectors home and abroad...

The employment rate is almost 100% for architects. It never happens that an architect sits at home and does nothing. The fresh graduates from architecture either do a job in some architectural firms or do some other good jobs. Or some of them do freelancing. Though we suggest that an architect should do a job in some firm for at least 2 years otherwise he/she cannot be a member of Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) because it requires a training under an architect of IAB. However, there are lots of jobs. As Bangladesh is a developing country, there is no way to be seated at home and do nothing.

Higher studies...

Right now, I can say that students can do Master of Architecture (M Arch) from BUET. Besides, BRACU also has introduced some higher study courses. I am sure that some other institutes will introduce their programs soon. Overseas masters has a great evaluation. Because by then a focus is fixed, they get work easily. Different countries offer architectural courses for higher studies. Far east is a good option now a days. West is also an option. Whenever our students apply at the US they get chance there too.

To the newcomers...

I never support the fact that a student is forced to take a subject. If someone wants to study architecture he should take this. Some may think that architecture is so vast and open ended, better take a safe subject. But no! I must say that if your passion is architecture, you should take this.
