We will be needing extra 250 engineers in the next few years

Dr. M. Rafiqul Islam
Professor, Department of Naval Architecture & Marine EngineeringBangladesh University of Engineering & Technology:BUET
Prerequisites & talents required...
Like any other engineering discipline, the common prerequisites are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. But, if I talk about a specific talent then it is the student's interest at becoming a good naval architect or a ship designer. In that case, the students should prepare themselves mentally beforehand. And it would be a great advantage for them.
Interesting events and competitions...
As we are in Dhaka, at the center of Bangladesh, not close to any river or sea; we take our first semester students to some shipbuilding industries so that they can have a total picture of what naval architects do and what their targets will be. We have industrial trainings throughout the 4 years course. We arrange ship designing competitions locally. Besides, Royal Institute of Naval Architects arranges competitions globally. It is co ordinated from UK. Our students participated there twice already. Last year we became 13th in the design contest.
Is the subject mathematical/logical/theoretical? Does it demand any extra physical labor?
Mathematics and Logics are very important. These are must. And they will gradually grow up their theoretical knowledge. Besides, they should be physically sound as they may have to work in industries.
Goals that can be reached...
A student will be recognized as a naval architect after graduating from this department. He can also be an ocean engineer. Our contribution to exploring oil fields is huge. One can work in this sector too. One can work with floating structures. Our students can also work as a marine engineer. One can be designer. Besides, we have 13 classes. They do survey on new vessels. So one can be a part of this survey which is also very much prestigious.
Jobs and job sectors home and abroad...
The demand for engineers is currently so high that different companies write to us so that we can send and motivate our graduates to join there. For that reason, day by day our department is growing bigger. We expect that we will earn a big amount of foreign currencies in the next ten years. To that extent, our department along with the government and this community of ours, we all are working hard. We need more naval engineers to meet the demand. If we can keep all our graduates working in the country even then we will be needing extra 250 engineers in the next few years. But we see that about 50% of our graduates go for higher study and stay abroad. On the top of that, no other engineer from other branches of engineering can mitigate the demand of naval architects. So to meet the growing demand more students will get chance to be naval architects.
Chances of entrepreneurship and leadership...
I think it is easy to be an entrepreneur from this subject if one has that potential or ability to be a leader. One can form a design house or can take loan from banks and start his own business easily.
Dream jobs...
There are 13 classification societies around the world who approve the ocean going ships. Any vessel must be approved by at least one of the societies. So jobs in these societies are the dream jobs of our students. This is because their salary scale is so high. They can travel around the world. And many of our students are entering these societies. We expect that if our ship building societies grow bigger then classification societies will recruit more of our graduates.
Higher Studies...
As I have said earlier, a student after passing from our department can do higher studies on naval architecture, offshore engineering or ocean engineering. There are many other branches related to these. A student can go to mechanical engineering or marine engineering from our field. There are some more specific fields like hydrodynamics or even aeronautical engineering. Like in Virginia Tech, their ocean engineering and aeronautics are together the same subject. And different countries like Japan, Korea, Norway and UK have gone so far in this field. We have some linkage program with some universities like Osaka. They invited us there though it has not been signed yet. But many of our students go there. Yokohama National University, Pusan National University are some other examples. Besides, universities from Norway, America, Japan give scholarships to our students.
To the newcomers...
Those who want to study Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, my suggestion will be that they should go to our website http://www.buet.ac.bd/name/alpha/ where everything is explained. Definitely the subject has high demand and is very interesting. But you should not only get motivated through these words only. Students must judge by themselves first and then decide. As head of the department I would say that to be successful in the long run of your life, our subject is the best choice for you.
